If you would like advice and help building your car, please bring your kit to the clinic.  Tools will be available as well as a weight scale.  Help will be given to cut the car and place the weights in the car for anyone requiring help.  Location will be verified prior to the event.

OFFICIAL PINEWOOD DERBY RULES

 

(Adopted 12-99; Revised 11-10-10)

 

 

Car Specifications:

 

Width:  Maximum width of car not to exceed 2 3/4 inches

Length:  Maximum length of car not to exceed 7 inches

WeightMaximum weight of car not to exceed 5 ounces, as measured on the official scales

Wheelbase:  Length between front and rear axles must be 4 1/2 inches (+/- 1/8 inch)

Track WidthWidth must be at least 1 3/4 inches between the wheels

 ClearanceClearance between bottom of car and track must be at least 3/8 inches

  

Additional Rules:

 

1.     Car must be built from the official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit.  (Either New or Old Design).

 

2.    The car, competing in any category, must be built in the year it is raced.  All District Derby participants must enter the car they won with at their pack in the current year.

 

3.    Only the axles and wheels provided in the official Cub Scout Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Kit will be allowed. The wheels will be BSA wheels only, having “BSA Pinewood Derby” written in raised letters on the outside of the wheel.   Exception: Official BSA Colored wheels are approved for use and are subjected to all whell rules outlined in this document.

 

4.  Axels - The axles may be filed (for burrs only), sanded, and polished only;  no reduction in the diameter of the axles will be allowed.

 

5.  Wheels - The wheels in the newer BSA kits (released in late 2009) are different in appearance, weight and diameter than previous years.  They have no mold mark on the trad surface.  Either wheel is leagal to use (old or new design).

 

FOR ALL WHEELS - No modification to inner diameter or hub diameter - no lighting holes.  No reduction to the diameter or the width of the wheels will be allowed.

   

FOR OLD DESIGN WHEELS - Wheels may be sanded to remove the flashing with no changes to the shape of the wheel.    The wheels must have the outside ridges, and the injection mold mark on the outside diameter of the old style wheels must be present.

 

FOR NEWER DESIGN WHEELS - Wheels cannot be altered in any way.  The newer wheels must have the tread on the outer edge.

 

6.   It is permissible to drill holes for the axles as an option to the precut grooves; however, the tip of the nail must be visible for inspection through a viewing hole drilled perpendicular to the axle hole. When the axles are installed in the provided grooves, the end of the axles must be visible for the judges to determine that the axles are official scout axles.

 

7.  Wheel bearings, washers, bushings, springs, and hubcaps are prohibited.

 

8.    The car must be freewheeling and achieve motion through the effect of gravity only. Any design or device with the intent to transfer weight or induce speed is prohibited, i.e. inertial motors or ball bearings.

 

9.    Starting devices are not allowed, nor will cars be designed with the intent to provide a “head start”.  No part of car can extend past starting pin on the track.

 

10.  Only dry lubricants are allowed, i.e. Teflon powder, graphite, & graphite blends.

 

11.  Details such as steering wheel, driver, fins, or scoops are permissible provided these details meet the specifications listed above and are firmly attached to the car.

 

12.  Each car must pass inspection by the official Inspection Committee before it may compete. The ruling of the Inspection Committee is final.  The Coweta District Committee Race Representative is the authority for interpretation of any specification or rule.

 

13.  If a car does not pass inspection, the owner will be informed of the reason, and will be given an opportunity to make adjustments within the remaining official inspection period.

 

14.  Every pack will be given a copy of the Official Rules and must follow these rules in their pack for the Official Cub Scout Speed Race.  Rules and procedures will be posted on the District website.

 

15.  The car, competing in any category, can not display alcohol or tobacco related ads on it.

 

16.  Wheels and axles are subject to inspection after the final race in that division.  Illegal or modified wheels or axles will disqualify the entry in the speed division for that participant.

 

17.  For Most Unique and Best of Show - Awards will be presented for ALL ranks at the beginning of the District Pinewood Derby at a specific time set by the DPWD committee.  You must be present to accetp the award.  No waiting.  If you are not present at the posted time you will lose the award and the award will be presented to the runner up in the respective category.
